One of the best things about living in a coastal Orange County home is the many beautiful nature preserves to visit. Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, a wetlands, is one of these. The wetlands are one of the important habitats for birds and fish, especially for breeding and egg laying. In fact, there are more than 300 species of birds that make their home at Bolsa Chica. It’s a great place for bird watchers, as well as those interested in different kinds of fish. Plan a day to experience natural coastal Orange County living. Bolsa Chica is open seven days a week. There are five miles of trails to explore, which are open every day from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Coastal Orange County Home Owners Can Volunteer at the Reserve
The best place to start a visit is at the Interpretive Center, which is open seven days a week from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. Visit the aquaria with several saltwater species on display, including sea stars, sea cucumbers, crabs, and lobsters. You can also find out about species that are native to the reserve, as well as all about the wetlands ecology and conservation efforts.
Bolsa Chica holds several events for the public, including coastal Orange County home owners, throughout the month. On Saturday, October 13th, come for a public tour of the reserve from 10 a.m. to noon. Wear close-toed shoes and a hat and bring along a bottle of water. Animal feeding day is held each Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. Participants will learn about the habits of both land and marine species. Keep in mind that the snakes are fed during the demonstration, and that involves live mice.
The second Sunday and last Saturday of each month is public service day, and the next one will be Sunday, October 14th. Come from 9 a.m. to noon and help clean up trash and do other maintenance work around the reserve. Wear close-toed shoes, bring gloves and other protective clothing, and donate some heavy-duty trash bags. Everyone ages six and up are welcome.
