Come celebrate it and all of its creatures at the Dana Point Festival of Whales. This event has already taken place one weekend, but will also be happening March 14th and 15th, 2020. This is the 49th year of this festival and many families living in coastal Orange County make it a tradition every year.

There will be something for all ages and interests and it should be a great way to welcome the coming of spring by spending time outdoors. Events taking place only on Saturday, March 14th include the Cardboard Classic Dinghy Dash and Expo at Baby Beach, Boat Builders’ Brekky and BBQ on the Beach, Whale of a Beach Cleanup, and the 9th Annual Clam Chowder Cook Off at Baby Beach Park.

Events taking place both Saturday and Sunday include the Dana Point Fine Arts Association Show and Sale, Kids’ Fun Zone, British Invasion on the Harbor walkway, Marine Mammal Lecture Series at Harpoon Henry’s, visiting the Ocean Institute Education Center, and the Harbor Music Series at Dana Wharf and Mariners Village.

Events taking place only on Sunday include Just Havin’ Fun Car Club Show, Dana Hills High School and San Juan Hills High School Young Artists Show and Sale, Whale of a Concert on the Water, Whale of a Concert BBQ and Spirits Garden, and Kids Fishing Clinic and Trip. In addition to these, there are several opportunities for whale watching throughout each day.

Wednesday, April 1st, hear classics from Nat King Cole,Chet Baker, and others performed by John Proulx. Chuck Berghofer, Kevin Kanner, and Chuck Findley will also be featured.

Wednesday, May 13th, listen to the extraordinary Jackie Ryan sing The Great American Songbook. The Bill Cunliffe Trio, Chris Colangelo, Dean Koba, and Rickey Woodard will also be performing.

Tickets are on sale now. The cost is $55 for the gold section, $43 for the blue section, and $33 for a captains table. The restaurant also requires a $20 per person minimum purchase. See PGA Golf and Raise Money for Charity at the Hoag Classic

People living in coastal Orange County go to the Hoag Classic.Golfers living in coastal Orange County have a chance to see a PGA golf tournament and help raise money for a good cause. The Hoag Classic is coming up beginning Wednesday March 4th and running through Sunday, March 8th. The stop on the PGA Tour Champions is held at Newport Beach Country Club. The tournament raises money for Hoag, which operates two hospitals and multiple health centers throughout the area. Chances are good that all coastal Orange County home owners have been to a Hoag facility at one time or another. In addition to Hoag, the tournament supports many other local charities.

For the past five years, Hoag Classic has hosted a Military Appreciation Day. This year, all active duty, reservists, National Guard, retired military, and veterans are welcome to attend for free, along with three guests, and enjoy the golf as well as complimentary food and beverages. This year, the event will be on Saturday, March 7th.

Kids Living in Coastal Orange County Come for Youth Day

On Sunday, March 8th families living in Orange County are welcome to bring their kids for Youth Day. Students 18 and under enjoy complimentary entrance for the final day of the tournament. In addition to the pro golf, kids will enjoy the Fun Zone, where they can play golf-related games. There’s even a putting contest for middle and high school students. Experience the New Face of Classical Music at the Laguna Beach Music Festival

Hear classical music near coastal Orange County homes.Classical music lovers from coastal Orange County homes should check out the Laguna Beach Music Festival. It will start on Wednesday, February 5th and run through Saturday, February 8th. Ray Chen is an internationally acclaimed violinist. Not only is he a stunning player, he’s also revolutionizing the way people interact with classical music with his online media presence. Plan to come to the Festival Prelude to hear Chen’s vision for the festival and enjoy a special performance by Chen and other festival artists at 6 p.m. on February 5th. Classical Music Fans from Coastal Orange County Homes Meet Up and Coming Performers

The festival will officially begin with the opening recital on Thursday, February 6th at 8 p.m. Ray Chen will play, accompanied by Julio Elizalde on piano. The recital includes pieces by Ravel, Bach, and Saint-Saëns and will be held at Laguna Presbyterian Church. Elizalde is an acclaimed pianist and has performed as a soloist and chamber musician. He is also a dedicated musical educator and gives masterclasses throughout the United States.

On Friday, February 7th, Ray Chen, the Dover Quartet, and the Academy Virtuosi will perform at 8 p.m. at the Laguna Beach Artists Theatre. The program will include Warlock’s Capriol Suite and Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro for Strings, Op. 47. The Dover Quartet has achieved international acclaim since the group took every prize at the Banff Competition in 2013. The quartet’s members are first violinist Joel Link, violinist Bryan Lee, violist Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, and cellist Camden Shaw. In addition to performing, the group works with Music for Food, which works to raise funds for the fight against hunger. The Academy Virtuosi is a select string ensemble, made up of student performers and soloists from Colburn Music Academy.

The festival concludes on Saturday, February 8th with a concert at 7 p.m. at Laguna Beach Artists Theatre. Ray Chen, Julio Elizalde, and the Dover Quartet will perform Ravel’s String Quartet in F-Major and Chausson’s Concert for violin, piano, and string quartet in D major, Op. 21.

The Laguna Coast Wilderness Park parking lot is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the trails are open from 7 a.m. to sunset. Be aware that the park might be closed for a few days after rain. There is a parking fee of $3 per day, but annual passes are available in the park office. Stop into the Nix Nature Center to learn more about the park, the animals that call coastal Orange County home, the foliage, and the trails. There are many exhibits, wildlife viewing portals, and activities at the nature center. There are also regularly scheduled guided tours, events, and programs each month. There are more than 40 miles of trails that weave their way through Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. Each Box Haus group class includes nine rounds of boxing for every student. The classes max out at 20 students. If you want a little more one-on-one time with the coach, sign up for a ringside class. These classes have only four students and focus on stance, footwork, correct form for punching, and technique. See the Latest Show at the Laguna Playhouse--The Perfect Dog

Enjoy coastal Orange County living and go to the Laguna Playhouse.The Laguna Playhouse offers many concerts and productions each year to those who enjoy coastal Orange County living. One upcoming production is The Perfect Dog. This book that has been turned into a musical will run from January 17th through January 19th, 2020. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, and 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $18 for children and $28 for adults.

This performance will speak to both youth and dog lovers who call coastal Orange County home. The story is about a 12-year-old perfectionist named Sam. He is searching for a dog that has no flaws to enter into the town’s dog contest. He cannot find a dog without flaws and resorts to trying to train the family’s dog Max. In the process, Sam discovers that there is no such thing as a perfect dog, but a boy and his dog can be perfect for each other. The music is by David Abbinanti and the script is by Jill Abbinanti.

Expand the Horizons of Coastal Orange County Living with Drama Classes

In addition to offering shows, the Laguna Playhouse offers education and classes. Children as young as six can participate in creative drama and storytelling classes. Youth from ages nine through 18 are invited to participate in acting and musical theatre classes and also to perform in fully produced theatrical productions. Scholarships are available and know that class sizes are limited and fill up quickly, so enroll as early as possible.

In addition to The Perfect Dog, there are many more performances coming up soon for all who enjoy coastal Orange County living to consider attending. Newport Coast home owners love Restaurant Week.Try new restaurants near your Newport Coast home during Newport Beach Restaurant Week. This 14-day dining event will take place from January 13 through 26, 2020. Many restaurants in the area will be offering special prix-fixe menus that will showcase their food. Find deals for $15 or $20 for brunch, $10, $15, $20, or $25 for lunch, and $20, $30, $40, or $50 for dinner. Try as many of the 73 participating restaurants as possible over the two weeks. Visit your favorites and find new ones. Check out the full list of participating restaurants and find their special Restaurant Week menus. Please note that some restaurants do require reservations. 

Newport Coast Home Owners Enjoy Special Menus and Pricing

Here is a look at just a few of the participating restaurants and their available menus. Pelican Grill will offer lunch for $25 and dinner for $50. The lunch menu includes a choice of roasted kabocha squash soup or wild Scottish salmon tartare for an appetizer and braised pork osso bucco, grilled swordfish sandwich, or Mary’s chicken breast for an entree. The dinner menu includes the squash soup and salmon tartare as well as a duck confit croquette for appetizers. Available dinner entrees include the braised pork and Mary’s chicken breast as well as herb-crusted sablefish black cod. Dinner also includes a dessert, with a choice of apple crumble or chocolate lava cake. You might need a box to take leftovers back to your Newport Beach home.

Malarkey’s Irish Pub will offer lunch for $10 and dinner for $20. Lunch will include a house salad, corned beef sandwich and a choice of side. These choices include sweet potato fries, onion rings, fries, fruit, or tater tots. Add on a Helmsman Hazy IPA for just $5. The dinner menu includes a wedge salad, hand carved prime rib sandwich with the same choices for sides, and a slice of cheesecake.
