Everyone living in a Newport Beach home is invited to participate in a workshop at the Sherman Library and Gardens. The workshop is titled Bonsai Workshop: Creating a Traditional Japanese Three Point Display. This event will take place on Saturday, August 6th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. There is a maximum of 10 participants and the cost is $100 for members and $110 for non-members.

Jorge Perez and Debra Mouzy-Melitz from the Orange Empire Bonsai Society will be on site to teach participants. Everyone will create a traditional Japanese three point display to take back to their Newport Beach home or to give as a gift. Everyone will plant and style a cork-bark Portulacaria afra. In addition, everyone will assemble a mini-Saikei, which is a natural blend of rocks, smaller plants, trees, and mosses. Finally, all participants will paint a complimenting scroll that will feature a morning glory, which is the customary Japanese plant for August.

When the workshop concludes, everyone will arrange their bonzai and saikei with their scroll and a mat to complete a summer bonzai display. During the class, everyone will learn about the history and “rules” of a Japanese seasonal display. However, each participant will be encouraged to use their own creativity and complete a display that speaks to them.
